As I write this article, we are almost at the halfway point of 2020. As ole Dizzy Dean would say, Who would have thunk it? Here we are sailing along in 2020, and then COVID -19 hits, and it changes the way we are “doing church,” and will affect the way we “do church” in the future. What that looks like is still anyone’s guess. After 11 weeks of strictly online services, we started meeting again on May 31. I assure you it is easier to preach to live folks than to stare into a camera. We look forward to the time we will all gather together again.
As we move into July, we will continue to have 2 morning worship services at 8:30 and 10:30. We presently have 2 classes meeting for Sunday School at 9:30. If your class would like to start the process of meeting again in July, please let us know in the office, and we will find your class a room that would ensure social distancing. The add on during July is a 10:30 Children’s Church lead by Bro. Kyle. You will find that information along with an August Sunday and Wednesday night VBS in the newsletter.
If COVID-19 were not enough, we are experiencing a division in our country both racially and politically. I am burdened for our nation. We find in Matthew 23:37 Jesus lamenting over Jerusalem. May we do no less for our nation.
On Tuesday, June 23, the Mississippi Baptist Convention Executive Director held a news conference and came out with a statement on the controversy concerning our state flag. The convention’s statement said: “Given the moral and spiritual nature of this issue, Mississippi Baptist leaders offer prayers for our state officials to have wisdom, courage and compas-sion to move forward. We encourage our governor and state Legislature to take the necessary steps to adopt a new flag for the state of Mississippi that represents the dignity of every Mississippian and promotes unity rather than division.” This is one of those hot-button issues that few people in our great state take a neutral stance. I know this statement does not satisfy every Mississippi Baptist, but I support our Convention’s stance, and I want us to move forward for the sake of the gospel.
I love you and thank God for the privilege of serving you.
Blessings,
Bro. Tommy
