When I was a child, I loved the month of June. The month meant school was out, the days were longer, and I had
plenty of time to play baseball on my little league team as well as play with my friends in the neighborhood. The
term lazy days of summer certainly was fitting at that point in my life. I can’t call these days lazy days, but I do view
them as wonderful days of opportunity. At FBC, the month of June means Vacation Bible School is upon us! I found
the following concerning the history of VBS:
Vacation Bible School began in the 1890s. A New York doctor’s wife wanted to find a way to keep children off the
streets in the summertime, and so she rented a large beer hall in the East Side in order to conduct what she called
“Everyday Bible School.” Her idea expanded, and eventually the New York City Baptist Mission Society established
several of these Bible schools around the city. A man named Robert G. Boville, formerly of the Baptist Mission
Society, was key in the program’s expansion to other cities around the country. By 1907, he had established a
national committee for Vacation Bible Schools.
Our VBS is scheduled for June 4-8 at FBC. Please keep VBS in your prayers, as it remains the most valuable tool we
have to reach children for Christ.
One of the focuses of our prayer time on Wednesday nights is for our homebound and those in the Nursing Homes
and Assisted Living homes. These would be active at FBC if they could, but physical limitations keep them from
doing so. Recently in a Deacon’s Meeting, we talked about making the Lord’s Supper available to those who are
unable to attend and observe this ordinance with their Church Family. If you, or a family member, are unable to
observe this ordinance at FBC because of physical limitations, our Staff and or Deacons will be glad to administer
this ordinance at your home, Nursing Home, or Assisted Living Facility. Please contact us through the Church
Office, and we will make this available.
Joyce and I love you and count it a joy to serve you.
All Because of Jesus,
Bro. Tommy
